Concepts in Three-dimensional Art

Exploration, study, and application of thematic concepts not generally associated with traditional three-dimensional art forms. Investigation of themes such as installation, performance, public, and socio-political art.

Class description

During the course of quarter, we will challenge all preconceived ideas about sculpture, space and art by constantly redefining the forms, roles, materials, and functions it can take. Bring your curiosity! You will expand the scope of your skills and concepts while working on a variety of individual or collaborative assignments.

Student learning goals

• Gain basic understanding of sculptural concepts, formal elements of 3D constructions, and their relationship in space and time.

• Gain experience with different techniques of 3D construction.

• Acquire basic familiarity with major modern and contemporary art movements and their representatives.

• Attain a vocabulary of art appreciation and criticism.

• Most importantly: Challenge yourself! Strive to fresh ideas! Be creative.

General method of instruction

Studio work sessions, presentations, field trips, and critiques.

Recommended preparation

NO PREREQUISITES! This is an introductory level course.

Class assignments and grading

Assignments may include: Textural, formal, and spatial studies using alternative, non-traditional sculptural materials, Woodshop fabrication, Large scale inflatable sculpture, Installation.

You will receive grades during the quarter for each projects completed. Your final grade will be determined by the following: - Participation (critiques, in-class projects, class discussions)

- Professional manner (turning in projects on time, individual effort, commitment, progress)

- Quality of projects (thought process, design, experimentation, development, craft)
