Student learning goals

General method of instruction

This is a studio course that requires you to invest at least 6-8 hours a week outside of class. There will be work time set aside in class, but the majority of experimentation and execution will be done outside of class. Class times will be spent on developing and discussing assignments, group projects and slide lectures.

Recommended preparation

No course requirements.

Experience with various art techniques, familiarity with Mac computers is helpful but not required.

Art supply list will be provided during the first class meeting.

Class assignments and grading

The assignments intend to explore the many facets of artistic process from the concept to the execution in a variety of formats and media. The class will provide you with many contemporary examples and tools to tackle these challenging assignments. Each project will have a few well-articulated limitations and goals (just like in real life). Outside of that you have complete freedom to be creative. Experiment and strive to fresh ideas! Have fun with the projects!

Final grade will be determined by the following:

Participation (critiques, in-class projects, class discussions) 20%

Professional manner 20% (turning in projects on time, individual effort, commitment, progress)

Quality of projects 60% (satisfying goals and limitations of the assignment, thought process, design, experimentation, craft)

The information above is intended to be helpful in choosing courses. Because the instructor may further develop his/her plans for this course, its characteristics are subject to change without notice. In most cases, the official course syllabus will be distributed on the first day of class.
