Three-Dimensional Design Fundamentals

Through use of a variety of materials, three-dimensional fundamentals are investigated for formal and conceptual concerns as they apply to the visual arts. Offered: AWSp.

Class description

Students will learn basic concepts of structure, construction techniques, and three-dimensional issues of form - line, plane, and volume. The course emphasizes problem solving, the generation of meaning in three dimensions, and invention.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

This is a hands on course. Students will work on 3-5 projects a quarter. Some research will be required and some projects will be done in groups. Work on projects will be done both in class and as homework. All work will be publicly discussed in a critique format (crit). The Crit is one of the primary ways the faculty will assess the student's progress. Students will be expected to present their own work and participate verbally in crits.

Recommended preparation

This is a beginning course in the School of Art. Students are not required to have any experience ahead of time. Prior experience with art and construction techniques will be helpful but not essential.

Class assignments and grading

All projects will require some form of construction, problem solving, and trial-and-error experimentation. Some work will require library research and some will require finding non-traditional materials from the urban environment.

Materials and Tools: Since the material/lab fee for this class is fairly low, you will be expected to purchase some supplies. Every attempt will be made to keep expenses low, which is occasionally accomplished by your resourceful scrounging of material. This is standard procedure in art, particularly the three-dimensional disciplines. There will be other materials you will need to acquire as the quarter progresses. Expect to spend between $30 and $100. Remember that there is no text for this course.

You will need for the class (this list might be amended on the first day of class): 1) utility knife or equivalent - (sometimes referred to as a mat knife) replaceable blades 2) x-acto knife and blades or equivalent 3) metal straightedge ruler - minimum 18 inches 4) scissors 5) heavy thread or string (do not purchase right away - wait for instructions) 6) Hot glue gun - 1/2 inch glue stick size and glue sticks 7) pliers with good wire cutter

Other useful tools: tape measure, hammer, bucket

Creativity, successful completion of the work, problem solving, concept, class participation, craft, and studio practice.

The information above is intended to be helpful in choosing courses. Because the instructor may further develop his/her plans for this course, its characteristics are subject to change without notice. In most cases, the official course syllabus will be distributed on the first day of class.
