Introduction to recurring themes and practices in the visual arts. Moves beyond medium-based categories, surveying a diverse range of issues that motivate artists and create content in contemporary art. Examines the importance and influence of the visual arts in the larger context of contemporary culture and society.
Class description
Autumn Quarter 2004 Students will be introduced to the issues and influences affecting contemporary art and design.

General method of instruction
Method of instruction will include faculty and visiting artist lectures, selected readings, related site visits and field trips.
Recommended preparation
An interest in the fields of contemporary art and design.
Class assignments and grading
Assignments will include weekly readings and site visits.

Grading will be based on periodic quizzes and up to three writing assigments.
