Flight Mechanics I

Calculation of aerodynamic characteristics of aircraft and components including stability derivatives. Relation to wind tunnel and flight data. Vehicle equations of motion within the atmosphere, characteristics of propulsion systems and components including propellers. Prediction of performance, stability and control characteristics for a specific aircraft. Offered: W.

Class description

Static longitudinal stability. Static lateral stability. Maneuvering control. Aerodynamic stability and control derivatives. Linearized equations of motion. Longitudinal aircraft dynamics, stability and control. Lateral aircraft dynamics, stability and control.

Student learning goals

Know how to determine static longitudinal and lateral stability.

Know how to develop linearized longitudinal and lateral dynamics.

Understand the aircraft longitudinal and lateral dynamic stability.

Be able to evaluate the aircraft responses to initial disturbances and control inputs.

Be able to examine the aircraft flying and handling qualities.

Be able to determine aerodynamic stability and control derivatives.

General method of instruction

Lectures.

Recommended preparation

Aerodynamics. Dynamics. Ordinary differential equations. Linear algebra.

Class assignments and grading

Homeworks from problems in the textbook. Project.
