Topics in Policy Research

Explores topics in policy research to prepare students planning to enter a graduate level policy program. Topics may include: quantitative research methods, qualitative research methods, or research writing for the social sciences.

Class description

This course will lay the foundations for an understanding of policy studies as an academic and professional discipline. We will focus on the philosophical, economic, and political foundations of a field that includes public policy, public administration, and public affairs, and will introduce students to the basics of social science research.

General method of instruction

The course will be a mix of lecture and discussion.

Recommended preparation

Basic courses in political science, economics, and political philosophy or their equivalent would be helpful.

Class assignments and grading

Assignments will include reading, case studies, and the preparation of a standard social science research proposal.

Grades will be based on quality of writing, discussion, and research.
