Issues in Global Cultural Studies

Examination of various topics and approaches to the study of culture in a global context. May include the study art, literature, theater, cultural history, music history/ethnomusicology, and/or cultural anthropology/geography. Topics and approaches may vary with instructor.

Class description

Transnationalism and Performance

In this course, we will investigate how transnationalism--the globalized flow of capital, people, and culture--has impacted a number of performance genres such as theater, film, hiphop, and pow-wows. We will examine performances in different geographical sites and ask how these connect with questions of human rights and community identity. Student learning goals

General method of instruction

This course includes a combination of lecture, film, discussion, and group activities. Each section will culminate in a short writing assignment that demonstrates a synthesis of questions regarding transnationalism and performance for that particular section topic.

Recommended preparation

In general, some prior coursework in global studies and/or the arts can be useful but is not required.

Class assignments and grading

Participation (discussion, small and large group activities), short writing assignments, one test, and a final project
