Examination of a specific topic in order to provide a deeper understanding of a particular aspect of psychology. Topics may include the history of psychology; human memory; dreaming; cognitive psychology.
Class description
SUMMER 2007. Human Memory. An examination of contemporary topics in memory research, with a focus on the past forty years. Recent topics have included: the misinformation effect and the controversy over repressed (“recovered”) memories, memory models, working memory, implicit/explicit (declarative/non-declarative) memory, schematic memory, metamemory, early memory development, memory impairment due to aging and Alzheimer’s disease, memory and emotion, and historical approaches.
Student learning goals
students will be able to perform an experiment that taps into a memory phenomenon (from the survey of topics we cover)
students will report data from an experimental study, and draw conclusions about their findings as they impact specific memory constructs
students will gain a broad understanding of historical approaches to the study of memory, as well as contemporary methodologies
students will gain some familiarity with case studies in memory impairment as they have informed the field of memory research

lecture/discussion; oral presentations in groups

Class assignments and grading
a midterm essay; a final write-up of an experimental design; a final review paper of a book
