HACKER CULTURE Who really is a hacker? Are they the dark villains often portrayed in the media or are they misunderstood computer geniuses? Are they all males or are there female hackers? What is the history behind the stereotypes of these seemingly mysterious individuals? In this seminar, we will look at hackers and their culture thorough books, movies, television, games and of course the Net. We will look at the role they play in our society today. We will also look at questions of privacy, access and freedom of information through the role of the hacker. The goal of the class is for students to have a real understanding of what it means to be a “hacker" past, present and future.
