This course will cover the basic elements of reporting and writing for print media, as well as meta-issues of ethics, the First Amendment, and a brief history of American journalism, such that the course teaches reporting skills and the cultural context for the practice of those skills.

*fundamental understanding of ethical and legal issues in journalism, including the First Amendment
General method of instruction
This is a hands-on course. Students will learn by practicing reporting and writing, with extensive feedback from the instructor and peers.
Recommended preparation
Reading daily news, especially in print format, would be very helpful preparation for this course.
Class assignments and grading
Assignments will consist primarily of reporting and writing various kinds of news and features.
Grades will be based mostly on several short reporting and writing assignments, class contribution, and a learning portfolio.
