Capstone Research in Environmental Science I

The first course of a two-quarter capstone sequence. Students plan and develop a detailed proposal for their capstone environmental science project. Prerequisite: BES 301; BES 311; BES 315.

Class description

WINTER 2005:

How to develop realistic scientific questions and hypotheses. How to design an experiment to test these questions. How to plan and carry out a scientific project thru to completion.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Some lectures, but not too much. Much of the work in this class is individual literature research, developing questions and hypotheses, writing proposals and defending your proposal in front of your classmates.

Recommended preparation

BES 301, 311, 315 and at least 10 additional BES credits. Senior status in BES program.

Class assignments and grading

Written literature review. Question and hypothesis development. Experimental project plan

Quality of literature review. Quality of scientific questions and hypotheses. Quality of experimental project plan.
