Advanced Environmental Measurements Laboratory

Analysis of air, water, and soil samples using advanced methods. Instrumental methods include: atomic absorption spectroscopy and liquid chromatography. Prerequisite: BES 311, BES 315.

Class description

Primary course objectives are for students to learn: 1) Advanced instrumental methods for analysis of environmental samples (FAA, GFAA, FTIR, GC, GCMS, HPLC, etc); 2) How to interpret and analyze the data on environmental analyses; 3) How to communicate the results in various written formats.

General method of instruction

The primary instruction method is hands-on labwork. Students will collect air, water and soil samples and do laboratory analysis of them.

Recommended preparation

BES 301, 311 and 315 are all required prerequisites, as is a statistics class.

Pre-lab assignments. Written lab reports Final exam

Written lab reports and final exam.
