Class description
Teaching mathematics requires a deep knowledge of students’ thinking. This course is designed to engage participants in making sense of students’ mathematical thinking in grades P-3, with a focus on Number and Operations. Anchored in Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) and Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematical Practices and Content, our work will follow the trajectory of students’ thinking as it develops over time. We will draw on CGI frameworks and CCSS progression documents to think carefully about content and pedagogy that support students’ conceptual understanding of, and fluency with, number. We will also incorporate study of classroom routines and formats that support early numeracy (such as Number Talks and Small-Group meetings).
