Special Topics in First-Year Learning

Various topics designed to respond to curricular interests and needs for first-year students. Offered: AWSp.

Class description

This course will examine the history and current structure of the American health care system, with a particular emphasis on health insurance systems. We will focus on the current disparities in health and health services and discuss current efforts to reform the system to create more equitable outcomes through institutional changes and regulatory mechanisms.

Student learning goals

At the end of this course, students will be able to: 1. Describe the current structure of the American health care system. 2. Describe the disparities of health access and health outcomes. 3. Understand the historical context and content of the Affordable Care Act 4. Discuss ethical strategies for containing costs and allocating resources.

General method of instruction

Recommended preparation

No prerequisites other than an interest in the American health care system

Class assignments and grading

Readings, quizzes, exploration assignments, paper.

Grades assigned on the basis of class participation, understanding of and engagement with the material.
