Topics in Global Cultural Studies

Links a specific area of study, such as hip hop. YouTube, or garbage, to global cultural studies and the methodologies of visual, material, textual, or arts-based research. Offered: AWSpS.

Class description

Focusing primarily on media and arts policy this course examines the growing importance of cultural policy as a site at which a variety of actors – from international organizations, to national governments, from corporations to activists and NGOs – seek to legitimate particular ways of living and the rights and duties of citizenship. The course adopts a triple sited approach as it will consider the interrelatedness of international, national, and local contexts. Students will consider the possibilities and challenges that face intervention into cultural policy processes at these different levels.
