The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) applies to higher education institutions that receive funding from the Department of Education. Among other requirements, the FERPA gives a student some control over the disclosure of the student's educational record. An educational record is broadly defined as any record that directly identifies a student and is maintained by the institution or educational agency or by a party acting for the institution or educational agency.
Questions may arise a to the application of the FERPA when a student is the victim of violence, a witness to an event, or when there are concerns about a student's potential for behaving violently.

If you are concerned that the FERPA may limit your ability to talk about a potentially violent, non-emergent situation involving a student, call 425-352-SAFE (425-352-7233) and tell the person who responds that the matter involves a student, and that you think FERPA regulations may apply. The Violence Prevention and Response Team staff will involve University specialists who can determine the FERPA's applicability to the situation that concerns you, and the best course of action to pursue under the particular circumstances.
