UW Rome Center

Transportation

Walking is a great way to see the city, but be careful of the traffic and pick pocketing. There are very few sidewalks and many motor scooters and vehicles! The bus and subway systems are convenient and inexpensive. Bus/subway tickets cost €1.50 and can be used to transfer within 100 minutes from the time they are first validated. They are sold at ticket booths, ticket vending machines, some newsstands, and most tobacco shops. Enter buses from the back or front door and validate the ticket in the machine inside the bus; get off from the central doors.

Getting to the UW Rome Center

From the airport

CAR AND DRIVER   The most convenient way to get to the Rome Center is to book a car and driver in advance. Contact the UWRC at least 3 business days in advance with your flight itinerary. The cost is €40 for up to 2 people and €45 for up to 4 people; €5 surcharge between 11 pm and 5 am. Please note that no-shows and cancellations with less than 24-hour business day notice must pay in full.

SHUTTLE   The least expensive option for getting to downtown Rome from the airport is to take a shuttle bus.

  •  Schiaffini Aiport Bus connects both Fiumicino and Ciampino airports to Termini Station. It costs 5.90 euros to go from Fiumicino with Termini Station and 4.90 euros to go from Ciampino to Termini Station. See website for details.
  •  SITBus Shuttle connects both Fiumicino and Ciampino airports with Termini Station and also goes to Via Crescenzio 2 (near the Vatican), which is a 15 – 20 minute walk from the  UW Rome Center. Tickets cost 6 euros. See website for details.
  •  T.A.M. connects only Fiumicino airport with Termini Station and Ostiense Station. Tickets cost 5 euros. See webiste for details.

AIRPORT TRAIN   From Fiumicino airport there is also train service running every 30 minutes or so to the Stazione Trastevere. Tickets cost about €8.  (Don’t take the Leonardo Express train to the Stazione Termini, since this costs twice as much and doesn’t get you as close to the Rome Center.)  From the Trastevere train station, take the #8 tram directly to Largo Argentina; from there it’s about a 5-block walk to the Rome Center. Click here to see a map.

TAXI (not recommended)   Should you choose to take a taxi, be forewarned that drivers frequently try to charge more than the flat rate established by law from Fiumicino airport to the historic center of Rome (currently €48 for a City of Rome cab, €60 for a City of Fiumicino cab). This rate is applicable regardless of time of day, number of passengers, and quantity of luggage. Make sure that you have *exact change* ready, and that you and your luggage are out of the taxi before you pay the driver. Please be forewarned that drivers often try to charge more (as much as €100+).

From the train station

TRAIN (From another European location)   You will probably arrive at the Stazione Termini and will need to travel to the UWRC using a taxi or bus.

TAXI (From the train station)   Take a metered cab (especially if you have a lot of luggage) from the station to the UWRC. The cab ride should cost about €15, depending on the time of day and amount of luggage you have.

BUS  If you choose to take a bus to the UWRC, you should purchase a bus ticket (€1.50; sold at newsstands, tobacco shops, and from vending machines). From the main train station (Stazione Termini) take either bus #64 or bus #40. If taking #64, get off at the first stop on Corso Vittorio Emanuele (just past the large bus hub at Largo Argentina). If taking bus #40, get off at Largo Argentina;  see above map. (If arriving at the Trastevere train station, take the #8 tram from the stop outside the station to Largo Argentina.) Please note that the #64 and #40 buses are almost always crowded and pickpockets are VERY common. Be extremely careful to guard your belongings, especially when you are standing up or when getting on and off the bus.
