I would like to express my gratitude to Alvin L. Kwiram, Vice Provost for Research, for the opportunity to compile this second volume in our Century of Excellence series. Researching this anthology led me on quite an adventure through the University's past. It has been a most enjoyable and enlightening experience.
As in the case of the first volume, Pathbreakers, putting together an anthology of this scope would not have been possible without many "helping hands." First and foremost, I would like to thank all of the faculty and staff who responded to our requests for information and who participated in the development of the vignettes. I am grateful for their patience and assistance throughout this time-consuming process. Special thanks to the Deans, Directors, and Chairs who contributed ideas and feedback.
In the preparation of these vignettes, I drew heavily upon the resources of the UW Office of News and Information, especially the excellent files that they have kept over the years on UW faculty. I would like to convey my sincerest thanks to Bob Roseth for use of these special facilities. Given our time constraints, it would not have been possible to research and write many of the vignettes without access to these files. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of UW news writers and the staff of the UW Alumni Magazine, Columns, for the many articles and press releases that served as source material.
Special thanks to those who reviewed all or portions of the manuscript: Richard Dunn, Jerry Finrow, Arthur Grossman, Susan Jeffords, Dick Lorenzen, Bob Roseth, Leroy Searle, and John Simpson.
My thanks also to the staff of the Office of Research who have helped, directly or indirectly, in the process, especially Eric Dahl, who helped get the project started; Alan Li, for computing support; Janet Skeels, for consultations; and to Cynthia Wythe and Mike Caputi, for day-to-day support.
I am indebted to Gary Menges, Head of Special Collections and Preservation in the Allen Library for his efforts on behalf of the project. I'd also like to thank University Photography for their assistance.
Finally, I would like to express my gratitude-and not a little awe and amazement-for the creative efforts of our designer Sarah Conrad-Kroehler. Special thanks to Stuart Roy, John Linse, Maggie Keech, and the team at UW Publications Services for a splendid production job.
