No-Cost Extension

Complete a No-Cost Extension Request

What is a No-Cost Extension? It allows a Principal Investigator (PI) additional time to complete the scope of work of her/his project without additional funding. A PI submits a No Cost Extension Request to the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) which is logged into the OSP database and assigned to a Grant and Contract Administrator for review and processing.

How does the approval process work? Approval is based on sponsoring agency guidelines and on the reasonableness of the justification for the use of the unspent account balance. Upon approving a request, OSP notifies the sponsor and authorizes Grant and Contract Accounting (GCA) to extend the budget which then enters it on-line.

If the no cost extension request cannot be approved by OSP under the sponsor guidelines, OSP will contact the requestor to coordinate submission of a formal request to the sponsor for its approval of the extension. If the agency approves the request, OSP will authorize GCA to extend the budget and enter it on-line.

When are final reports due? It is important to note that the final technical, financial and invention reports must be provided to the funding agency 90 days after the new grant expiration date in order to complete the grant close-out process.
