Vice Provost

Profile

In November 2005, Mary Lidstrom was appointed Vice Provost for Research for the University of Washington, one of the world’s leading research universities. Working collaboratively with the entire UW research community, Lidstrom is committed to ensuring that the UW is an excellent place to do research.

Dr. Lidstrom serves as a Professor in Chemical Engineering and Microbiology and holds the Frank Jungers Chair of Engineering. She is the co-director of an NIH Center of Excellence in Genomic Sciences (the Microscale Life Sciences Center), and has implemented an educational initiative to engage engineering students in research careers at the engineering/biology boundary through her HHMI Professorship.

As the Associate Dean for New Initiatives in the College of Engineering, Dr. Lidstrom pioneered professional development workshops and consulted extensively with teams interested in setting up interdisciplinary research centers.

Dr. Lidstrom received a B.S. in microbiology from Oregon State University, and a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin. As a Leverhulme Fellow in Microbiology, she conducted postdoctoral work at the University of Sheffield, UK. Additionally, Dr. Lidstrom has held academic appointments in the Center for Great Lakes Studies in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and in Environmental Engineering Science at the California Institute of Technology.
