Mani Soma is currently the Associate Vice Provost for Research, Industry Relations and a professor of electrical engineering. At the Office of Research, Soma assists in building relationships with industry, management of major initiatives such as e-science, Neptune, etc., in cooperation with other AVPs (e.g. John Wilkerson), and with the development of online systems and tools for research administration (e.g. SAGE, Researchware).
His research involves the design and test of integrated circuits and bioelectronic systems. Soma earned his bachelor's degrees in electrical engineering and math, with a minor in physics at California State University-Fresno. He then attended Stanford University for graduate studies, earning a doctorate in 1980. He worked for General Electric in Schenectady, NY, before coming to the UW as an assistant professor in 1982.
Prior to joining the Office of Research as an Associate Vice Provost for Research, he was the acting Dean of the College of Engineering, and was previously an assistant director and director of various centers, and an associate chairman and acting chairman for the Department of Electrical Engineering.
