An Update from Olympia
This year's abbreviated legislative session ended with modest gains for the UW after a great biennial budget from the 2007-2009 budget cycle. The Governor’s desire to maintain a large budget reserve coupled with a $423 million drop in revenues in February meant that some of our high-priority initiatives went unfunded, such as benchmarking health-care performance in Washington state and improved campus safety.
Still we hardly went away empty-handed. For example, legislators granted us: $1 million in ongoing support for our eScience Institute, $3 million for UW Tacoma land acquisition and soils remediation, and a continuation of funding for recruiting star entrepreneurial researcher
