CITI Web-Based Training

» Proceed to CITI Program Web Site

The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) is a web based training program in human research subjects protections. UW faculty, staff and students who are involved in research with human subjects are encouraged to complete training. Key personnel* for NIH funded human subjects research can fulfill the NIH training requirement by completing one of the CITI training courses.

You will be asked to select a Learner Group appropriate to your involvement in human subjects research. Options include:

  1. Student Course (30-45 minutes)
Students participating in classroom projects, but who are not conducting their own research as a principle investigator (i.e., the research is not part of a Master’s or Doctoral thesis and the student is not staff on an externally-funded research project). It is recommended that Faculty Advisors complete the Student Course – either on its own or as an optional module within the curriculum of their appropriate learner group. Note: The Student Course does not meet the NIH training requirement.
  2. Biomedical Course (3-5 hours)
Researchers and research staff (including faculty, staff, and students) who are engaged, primarily or exclusively, in research in the Biomedical Sciences.
  3. Social/Behavioral Course (3-5 hours)
Researchers and research staff (including faculty, staff, and students) who are engaged, primarily or exclusively, in research in the Social and/or Behavioral Sciences.
  4. Biomedical & Social/Behavioral Course (4-6 hours)
Researchers and research staff (including faculty, staff, and students) who are engaged in research that involves both Biomedical and Social and/or Behavioral approaches.
  5. Refresher Course (2-3 hours)
Based on funding and other institutional requirements, researchers and research staff may be required to take human subjects training every 2-3 years. The Refresher Course meets this requirement, covering content within your selected Learner Group.

Once you have completed the course, print or download a “Course Completion Report” as evidence that you have met your institutional requirements. A copy will be sent to the institutional administrator at HSD and will be posted on the HSD Training Status page.

Questions regarding CITI should be addressed to the HSD Training Team.

CITI was founded in March 2000 and is hosted by University of Miami. The UW was one of 10 start-up organizations that contributed to the development of these online courses.

*NIH specifies who needs to receive required human subjects education as: "Individuals who will be involved in the design and conduct of NIH-funded human subjects research must fulfill the education requirement."
