Public Data Sets

The Human Subjects Division (HSD) reviews commonly used, publicly available, data sets upon request to determine whether research with them involves "human subjects" as defined by federal regulations. Those data sets that do not involve human subjects are labeled by HSD as Public Data Sets. The research use of such data sets requires neither IRB review, exempt status, nor any interaction with HSD.

This evaluation is performed as a service to researchers. The list of Public Data Sets is at the end of the SOP Public Data Sets document.
