Department Review and Approval

What happens in my department before IRB review?

Schools, departments, and units have different processes, but the following activities typically take place at this level before research is sent to HSD for review by the IRB:

  • review of research design and/or methods,
  • assessment of scientific merit,
  • thesis/dissertation committee review.

Are signatures required on IRB applications?

Signatures are required only on the following documents:

  • Initial IRB applications (all types),
  • Modification (to change the lead researcher),
  • UW Confidentiality Agreement.

Who signs these documents before being sent to HSD are:

  • the lead researcher/principal investigator.
  • the faculty advisor (when the lead researcher is a student).
  • the department or division chair, or center director of the lead researcher.
