About HSD

The Human Subjects Division (HSD) is a unit within the Office of Research (OR), initially established at the University of Washington in the early 1970s. Division staff support and facilitate review by the Institutional Review Board (IRB), required for research involving human subjects.

HSD staff and IRB members partner with researchers to safeguard the rights and welfare of human subjects in UW research. HSD provides oversight and administrative support to a full cycle of protection for research subjects and researchers through education and training, the IRB review process, and post-approval monitoring. The University of Washington adheres to the principles of the Belmont Report and assures full compliance with all federal regulations, state laws, and university policy governing the use of human subjects in research.
