1998 / 1999
  • Federal suspension of research activities at academic medical centers

  • Death of Jesse Gelsinger, a research volunteer

2001 / 2002
  • National Bioethics Advisory Commission report – Ethical and Policy Issues in Research Involving Human Participants

  • Institute of Medicine reports “Preserving Public Trust” and “Responsible Research”

  • Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) develops accreditation standards

  • Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) founded

2003 / 2004
  • The Secretary's Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections (SACHRP) Accreditation Subcommittee Report: “Accreditation promises to be a useful mechanism for all organizations involved in human research that, like education and certification for individuals, can lead to self improvement of systems and outcomes”

2005
  • As of December 2005: AAHRPP has accredited 33 organizations representing a total of 97 entities
