About HSD

Mission

HSD partners with researchers to safeguard the rights and welfare of human subjects in UW research. The University of Washington adheres to the principles of the Belmont Report and assures full compliance with all federal regulations, state laws, and university policy governing the use of human subjects in research.

History

The Human Subjects Division was established at the University of Washington in the early 1970s. HSD provides oversight and administrative support to a full cycle of protection for research subjects and researchers through education and training, the IRB Committee review process, and post-approval monitoring.

Committees

IRB/Human Subjects Review Committees at the University of Washington review more than 2000 new human subjects applications each year, plus nearly 3000 continuing reviews.
