- $3 million from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) to Genome Sciences for a comprehensive catalog of human DNaseI hypersensitive sites
- $3.5 million from the Department of Energy for the Nuclear Physics Lab for Experiemental Nuclear Physics Research
- $3.7 million from the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) for the UW Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Training
- $8 million from the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) for the Institute for Translational Health Sciences (ITHS)
- $10.8 million from NIH's National Human Genome Research Institute awarded as part of a national effort to expand the ENCyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) project. The project is the next phase of the Human Genome Project in which researchers will attempt to read instructions hidden within the human genome sequence and determine how to switch genes on and off.
- $1.35 million in institutional startup funding to launch the Indigenous Wellness Research Institute, which was established to help American Indians and other indigenous people achieve health and wellness. Director, Karina Walters, Social Work
- $2.2 million to develop detailed engineering specifications for a cabled underwater research facility to be built off the coast of Washington and Oregon on the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate. PI: John Delaney
- $29.7 million from the Health Resources and Service Administration for international AIDS education and training through the UW Dept. of Global Health. PI: King Holmes
- $105 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to create the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, a new research center that will conduct independent, rigorous evaluations of health programs worldwide. Director: Christopher J.L. Murray
- $10.2 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop tissue engineering and stem cell therapies for repairing damaged heart
- $3 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to help build a river-to-ocean environmental observatory for the Pacific Coast and Columbia River.
- $20 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to establish an interdisciplinary Dept. of Global Health.
