The Foundation has two types of awards: the Regular Grants Program and the Scholar Awards. This announcement is for the Regular Grants Program. The Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. Foundation is a private foundation that funds basic biomedical research in St Louis and throughout the United States. The mission of the Foundation is to support early stage investigators engaged in biomedical research that has the potential to significantly advance the understanding, diagnosis, or treatment of disease. Any domestic biomedical institution, whether solely research or educational, is invited to submit candidates for the Mallinckrodt Board's consideration on the schedule provided below. Deadlines are February 1 and August 1. Each institution is allowed to submit only two investigators in a given cycle. Applicants should be tenure-track and not have current R01 funding.
PIs can have appointments in other schools, but typically Mallinckrodt makes its grants to school of medicine faculty. The funds are designed to provide to tenure track faculty members at American Institutions who hold M.D.
and/or Ph.D. degrees start‐up support to move the project forward to the point where R01 or other independent funding can be obtained. Proposals must contain an adequately detailed description of the project to be clearly understandable by the scientific members of the Trustees. They need not be in the detail requested by the NIH for R01 grants and should not exceed five pages in length. Additional material can be submitted as an attachment, but the five page application should contain the essential information.
References should also be included to support the proposal. A one‐two page lay summary must be provided as part of the proposal. Applicants should bear in mind that our Board includes non‐scientist members, making this summary of particular importance.
In addition to the institution providing recognition of an internal selection process resulting in no more than two candidates (this requires just a sentence that may be included in the letters), the proposal must be accompanied by letters of approval by the Dean of the medical school and/or another senior faculty member or members who can represent the support of the institution and who are acquainted with the qualifications of the applicant and the potential impact of his/her work. An updated C.V. and bibliography must accompany the application. Proposals must contain an adequate budget with a breakdown as to how the funds will be used. It is important to justify how the funds to be received will be used to advance the unique problem under study in a way that cannot be done with existing funds. In addition, the proposal must detail the levels of support of any grants already available or pending. The Foundation will not fund overhead.
Grants will be made and restricted to domestic institutions. Funding for years 2 and 3 is contingent upon approval of a yearly progress report by the applicant submitted via e‐mail. These are generally one page summaries of the work in progress. Failure to submit progress reports jeopardizes subsequent funding.
Please submit a two-page letter of intent with a list of all anticipated investigators, description of proposed aims and approach, Biosketch of the PI, and a letter of support from the Dean or Chair to firstname.lastname@example.org by 5:00 PM Thursday, October 17 2013. This letter of support signifies that the Dean or Chair have ensured that the nominee and application are likely to be of sufficient quality to be competitive nationally. Full proposals are due to the sponsor on 2/1/14, so you will need to have your proposal to the Office of Sponsored Programs by 1/24/14 for processing, if given the go ahead by the Proposal Review Committee.
Investigators who identify a grant, award or fellowship program that restricts the number of applications that can be submitted from an Institution should immediately contact their Chairperson, Associate Dean for Research (or Dean, if no ADR) and the Office of Research (see below) if they intend to prepare a response. Failure to do so, or to meet the deadlines for submission of pre-proposal, will preclude submission of the application through the Office of Sponsored Programs.
