The mission of the University of Washington Rome Center is to foster disciplinary and interdisciplinary programs that profit from the broadened perspectives afforded by its unique location. The Rome Center provides a unique work place in Rome's historic center, offering outstanding facilities for academic programs from a wide variety of University of Washington departments.
The Rome Center now occupies three floors of the historic 17th-century palace known as "Palazzo Pio," located in the historic center of Rome. The University began restoration of its quarters in 1984 and the Center has been used continuously since its inauguration by a growing number of UW programs.
The Rome Center provides 18,000 square feet of living, instructional and support facilities which are organized to serve a range of needs. L arge and small rooms serve as classrooms or studios. The facility also provides a library and computer lab, slide library, faculty room, student lounge, large lecture hall/conference room, administrative office and faculty accommodations.

Library/Computer Lab, slide library, portable data projector, and computing equipment that can be checked out to students. Conference room is equipped for dual slide projection, video projector, multi-system VCR, multi-region DVD, audio system and large screen.
Some living accommodations for faculty and guests are provided in the Rome Center; others stay in off-campus apartments. All have kitchen and bath, and are furnished with dishes and linens.

Outreach: For outreach programs, study tours in Italy, conferences, symposia, etc. space can also be reserved by the week. The RC has hosted an American Institute of Architects conference and has hosted since 2006 the annual conference for the UW Center for Process Analytical Chemistry.

The building as a whole is in good condition. The elevator is reached by a flight of stairs and access to some floors and classrooms requires use of stairs.

Located in one the most important cities in the world, in proximity to major sites for the study of art, architecture, literature, history, music and religion as well as modern European, North African and Near Eastern politics, economics and international relations.
As of July 1, 2009 the University of Washington Rome Center is administered by the Office of Global Affairs. In addition to Rome-based Associate Director, there is a Rome Center Advisory Board chaired by Alan Grainger.
The Rome Center and UW program assistance are managed by a small Rome-based staff including Associate Director (Jennifer Wilkin), Program Administrator (Sheryl Brandalik), Accounting Coordinator (Laura Tagliapietra), Computing Manger (Matthew Newman), Student & Facility Coordinator (Federica Bianchi) and Student Intern.
