The ocean holds most of the excess heat and carbon in the climate system. However, our ability to predict changes in the ocean and the climate as a whole is hampered by our lack of understanding and skill in modeling ocean dynamics. Using numerical models of the coupled ocean-atmosphere system, we explore what role the ocean plays in heat and chemical storage under non-equilibrium conditions. Explorations using both weather forecast models as well as comprehensive models used for climate change research focuses our research on the coupling of oceanic changes to storms and sea-ice, and the storage of carbon.
