Turbulence in the lower portion of the atmospheric boundary layer is modeled by structural engineers through the use of Extreme Value distributions, spectral expressions for vertical, lateral and longitudinal components of velocities, integral scales, intensities and time series models. These methods are used in the wind energy arena for siting considerations.
