RCR Training Requirement Questions and Answers

With whom should I indicate institutional affiliation?
"University of Washington" if you are taking CITI RCR training. -
For CITI RCR training, which course(s) should I take?
Please consult with your department contact for which RCR course is most appropriate for you to take. -
How long will it take to complete each course?
For CITI RCR training, the average learner spends approximately 4.5 hours reviewing each Course and uses approximately 5 logins to complete the course. -
What is the minimum passing score?
For CITI RCR courses, you must have a passing score of 75% for the course to be considered complete. -
If I have an existing CITI username and password and have not taken any RCR courses, how do I add an RCR course?
After you’ve entered your existing username and password, you will be shown all courses you are currently registered for. If you want to add an RCR course, select "Add a course or update your learner group". You will then be asked to "select a curriculum". Select the most appropriate RCR course. -
As part of the CITI RCR training requirements, am I required to also take the Protection of Human Research Subjects or Good Clinical Practices (GCP) training offered by CITI?
No - not as part of the RCR training requirements. If you are a student or postdoctoral researcher supported by NSF, you are required to take the most relevant RCR course. -
When do I need to take the course again?
The UW currently does not have a requirement for the RCR course to be taken more than once. -
Do NSF Fellows have to take RCR training?
NSF Fellows conducting research at the University of Washington who are directly supported from salary or stipends paid by NSF are required to take RCR training. -
What proposals are impacted by the NSF requirement?
RCR training is required for those students and postdocs engaged in research who are directly supported from salary or stipends paid by NSF and are working on projects for proposals that are submitted ON OR AFTER January 4, 2010. -
Who gives me access / provides the username and password?
For CITI and CMDITR, creating a username and password is a self-registration process. -
If I’m a student, what department should I report as being affiliated with?
Report your department with which your PI on the NSF grant is affiliated. -
How much time do I have to complete the RCR trainings in their entirety?
The expectation is that you complete the trainings within three months of starting the training. -
Do PIs need to document in their proposals that RCR training will be provided?
PIs do not need to document anything in the proposal on RCR training. The University assures NSF that training is provided when submitting a proposal and it has the signature of the institutional official. -
Are PIs, other faculty working on NSF grants, or staff required to take RCR training?
The RCR training requirement is limited to students and postdocs directly supported from salary or stipends paid by NSF who are working on research projects, so faculty are not required to complete the RCR training. -
If I’m volunteering my time on an NSF specific project or am participating in a NSF supported project for course credit, am I required to take RCR training?
No. Only students and postodocs who are directly supported from salary or stipends paid by NSF and conducting research are subject to the RCR training requirement. -
If a UW PI is conducting research supported by an NSF grant and the PI is working with a non-US student who is volunteering effort on the grant and working in Europe, does this student need to complete the RCR Training?
Only UW students and postdocs directly supported from salary or stipends paid by NSF have to take RCR training through University of Washington. -
If I am an individual who has transferred from another institution where an RCR requirement was in place, will any prior training be accepted by the UW, or will I have to take the RCR training required and offered by UW?
If you are a UW student or post-doc receiving funding from NSF, you are required to complete RCR training while at the UW. Previous RCR training completions may not be used to meet the UW requirement. -

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Training for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Researchers
All University of Washington (UW) graduate students and postdoctoral researchers working on NSF-sponsored research projects are required to complete Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) provided by the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI).
Self-register for the course on the CITI program web site.
Registration Instructions
- Click on the link for "New Users Register Here."
- Select an institution – in most cases it should be the University of Washington.
Note: Indicate if you have affiliations with the VA, Dept of Energy, or HIV/AIDS Network Coordination. You will be able to provide information about multiple affiliations later.
- Select a username and password. These will be used to re-enter the course or to obtain completion information, so be sure to remember and retain these for later use.
- Enter your name. Please enter a complete first and last name, using upper and lower case letters.
- Enter your email address. You may enter only one, but may enter a "preferred" and "secondary" address.
- Provide "Member Information." Only fields with a red asterisk * are required.
- Select a curriculum. There are two pages where you must select curriculum. On the first page, select Graduate study and receiving funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF). If you are only taking the RCR curriculum, you will be asked on the second curriculum selection page to select from the following courses within the curriculum. Please select the most appropriate course pertaining to the research you will be conducting. If you have any questions regarding which course you should take, please contact your department contact.
Note: Please complete all fields that are optional. This will better assist our institution in tracking registration and completion information about each registered user.
CITI RCR CURRICULUM TYPES
- Biomedical
- Researchers and research staff (including faculty, staff, and students) who are engaged, primarily or exclusively, in research in Biomedical Sciences.
- Social/Behavioral
- Researchers and research staff (including faculty, staff, and students) who are engaged, primarily or exclusively, in research in the Social and/or Behavioral Sciences.
- Physical Sciences
- Researchers and research staff (including faculty, staff, and students) who are engaged primarily or exclusively, in research in the Physical Sciences.
- Humanities
- Researchers and research staff (including faculty, staff, and students) who are engaged primarily or exclusively, in research in Humanities.
- Engineering
- Researchers and research staff (including faculty, staff, and students) who are engaged primarily or exclusively, in research in Engineering.
The CITI RCR Course is divided into modules. Most modules have a short quiz at the end that must be completed before moving on to the next module.
A quiz can be taken more than once in order to obtain a score of 75% or better (the overall average that is required for satisfactory completion).
Learners can start and stop the course at any time. What you have done will besaved and, after logging off the CITI site ? upon returning you will begin at the same point where you had stopped.

Successful CITI RCR training completion can be confirmed three different ways:
- Confirm Completion via UW Website
(UWNetID secured webpage) Completion records for those individuals who have passed the CITI RCR course are available online and updated every Tuesday, no later than 5pm.
- Print or save completion reports from the CITI Website
CITI Learners may print or save an electronic version of the CITI Completion Report before exiting the CITI web site. Learners are prompted to view the Completion Report upon completion of the course.Learners can also re-enter the CITI website to obtain a Completion Report at any time. The Completion Report is available from the "Learners Menu" under "Course Completion History" from the list of options under your name. In the righthand column of the table is a link to "Print Completion Report."
