Community of Science (COS)

Sidebar / More Information

Community of Science (COS) is a global resource for hard-to-find information critical to scientific research and other projects across all disciplines. COS puts valuable information such as funding opportunities, profiles of experts, and a way to promote your work in one place.

Find Funding Opportunities

Search the Community of Science funding database for federal and non-federal funding opportunities. Access is available to all UW faculty, staff, and students.

Search for UW Experts

COS Expertise is the premier database of first-person profiles of researchers at leading universities and other institutions involved in basic or applied research.

Retrieve a Password and/or Username

To update a profile in the database and access the database from outside the University of Washington or "edu" domain, you must have a Username and Password.

Add an Expertise Profile

Before adding a profile, please confirm with your department administrator that an account has not already been established for you.

We recommend individuals currently involved in research, clinical, or scholarly activities and with a full appointment in a unit or department be included in the UW Expertise Database. If you have a joint appointment with two or more departments, please list each appointment separately in the same profile.

Update an Expertise Profile

  1. Log into http://workbench.cos.com.
  2. Select items on left under “Manage Your Profile” to edit.
  3. Click save to ensure your changes are entered.

Delete an Expertise Profile

As faculty leave the University, please make necessary changes in the database.

To delete a record:

  1. Log into http://workbench.cos.com.
  2. Select “Delete Profile” under “Manage Your Account.”
  3. Confirm “Delete.”

Note: Faculty members or unit administrators can delete records from Community of Science.

Frequently Asked COS Questions (FAQs)
How is information in the database different from what is on our department and faculty homepages?
The information can be the same. However, the platform, administered by COS, provides a searchable database that coordinates information unlike a department or faculty homepage.
Why is it important to have one searchable database?
Institutions of higher learning need to have quick and easy access to the expertise and faculty interests on their campus. Faculty and administration can use the database to identify others who work in a specific area or perform specialized techniques, serve on review groups of federal agencies and private foundations, or have funding from specific organizations. COS provides the platform to capture this information efficiently. Additionally, departments and faculty can link COS and their web site and homepages.
Who is able to access the information in this database?
COS is less accessible than department and faculty homepages. To access the COS database and UW Expertise Profiles you must be affiliated with member institution or have a username and password.
What kinds of information should be included in a profile?
Each record should contain the following information:
  • Name the faculty uses for publications,
  • The school, department and division their appointment is with (please select from the lists provided),
  • A personal e-mail address or one for the department,
  • One to two paragraphs about current research, clinical, or scholarly interests,
  • A list of five to ten of current publications (you can include more if you would like).
Do all of the faculty at the University have a COS record?
Most faculty at the University of Washington should have a record in the database. We recommend you include individuals who have a full or joint appointment in your department and who are currently involved in research, clinical or scholarly activities.
