About Student Life

The Office of the Vice President and Vice Provost for Student Life serves as the radial point for the diverse offices, departments, services, and programs that constitute the Division of Student Life, and that work across the University of Washington to ensure student growth and development. We also work directly with students and families in difficult situations when multiple services are needed to provide a safe transition. We are a resource for the entire campus community regarding concerns about students. This is the place to go when you don't know where to go.

Suicide Intervention and Student Welfare Program

The Student Welfare Program is designed to provide a safety net for students who are more seriously troubled or distressed and, in some cases, at risk for suicide or other self-harm, and/or endangering others. When a student's behavior indicates that safety is a significant concern, the student may be required to develop and complete a self-care plan. The program supports a community standard of wellness and self-welfare as defined by the Student Conduct Code (http://depts.washington.edu/cssc/).

Our goal is to promote and foster a healthy environment for all students. Please note this program is not designed to intervene in an emergency. If you or someone you know is in an emergent situation please call 911 for an immediate response.

Student-to-Student Harassment

Students who experience harassment from a fellow student can seek support from the Office of the Vice President and Vice Provost for Student Life. We will engage support services, address the harassing behavior informally, or work with the student through the Student Conduct Code (http://depts.washington.edu/cssc/) process.

Sexual harassment of students is prohibited under Title IX (http://www.dol.gov/oasam/regs/statutes/titleIX.htm). Representatives in our office will work with the specific circumstances of each student's experience, and exercise care, common sense, and professional judgment in response to each student's needs.

We will also help explore other avenues for reporting harassment. The Office of the Ombudsman is available for mediation, and Community Standards and Student Conduct provides a formal conduct code complaint process. Additional resources are available to students who experience faculty/staff-to-student harassment.
