Vice Provost, UW TechTransfer

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Mr. David Brown, Director of Finance and Business Operations for UW TechTransfer, has agreed to serve as interim Vice Provost for UWTT, effective June 3, 2008.

Vice Provost James Severson will step down to pursue other opportunities as of June 2, 2008. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jim for his years of service to the University of Washington in the important areas of technology transfer and intellectual property.

David Brown has been with the University of Washington in technology transfer for 14 years. He was with the licensing group for 7 years managing a large portfolio of medical-device related technologies, and associate director of this group for 2 years. For the last several years David has been the Director of the Finance & Business Operations group (FBO) within UW TechTransfer, where he manages a group responsible for all financial transactions for the office. As the Director of FBO, he also oversees the integration and maintenance of a system-wide database.

Mr. Brown has a Master of Business Administration from the University of Washington, a Master of Science from the University of Washington Department of Bioengineering, and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland. He previously worked at Abbott Laboratories as a product development engineer to develop medical devices using optically based chemical sensors.

The search for the next permanent vice provost for UWTT is actively underway under the joint leadership of Engineering Dean Matt O'Donnell and Ron Howell, CEO of the Washington Research Foundation.

Please join me in welcoming David Brown to the interim vice provost position, and in expressing appreciation to Jim Severson as he leaves us to pursue other opportunities.

Sincerely,

Phyllis M. Wise
Provost and Executive Vice President
