UW Strategic Roadmap Update: March/April 2008

Greetings Strategic Roadmap Team!

This is the third in a series of email progress updates we're sending to everyone involved with the Roadmap effort. We've reached a major Roadmap milestone by completing the initial plan, and we want to share some of the highlights with you.

Highlights in this issue:

Roadmap Working Team recommends five initiatives

The Strategic Roadmap Working Team wrapped up their recommendations on the Roadmap Action Plan and identified five strategic initiatives to implement over the next 8-10 years. Each of these initiatives reflects discussion and input from both the task groups and the Roadmap Working Team. The five initiatives are as follows:

  • Information for Decision Making:
Do the work necessary to enhance data management, develop infrastructure and tools, and provide standards and training for users across the UW.
  • Replace the Base:
Replace our aging legacy systems with flexible business systems to provide better information for decision making and improve operational efficiency.
  • Redesign Processes:
Redesign business processes in conjunction with legacy system replacement efforts to ensure that we streamline our existing processes to take full advantage of systems replacement opportunities.
  • Enhance and Renew Systems:
Invest in ongoing enhancement and technology renewal of administrative systems since we need ongoing resources to keep up with changing business needs.
  • Stakeholder Success:
Develop a transparent decision-making process and a mature portfolio management framework; enable collaborative projects across units.

Initial plan discussed with key stakeholders

The plan was presented to the Information Management Advisory Committee (I-MAC) on March 24. I-MAC is the steering committee for the Roadmap. Discussions with other key stakeholders are continuing, including with the University Technology Advisory Committee (U-TAC) on March 25 and the Board of Deans and Chancellors on April 16. These discussions will continue over the next few months.

Timelines: The recommended timelines for each of these initiatives can be viewed in the presentation given to the I-MAC on March 24. See: http://www.washington.edu/president/tacs/imac/meetings/2007-08/materials/03.24.roadmap.action.plan.pdf
