Strategic Roadmap Update: October/November 2007

This is the first of a series of progress updates on the UW Strategic Roadmap project that is being sent to everyone involved with the Roadmap effort and posted on the Roadmap Web site.

Highlights in this issue:

For a more high-level view of progress on the Roadmap and other key efforts underway in OIM, please see the OIM Highlights at: http://www.washington.edu/provost/oim/reports/OIM_Highlights_October2007.pdf

Roadmap Working Team Kicks Off Strategic Roadmap Project

The Roadmap Working Team kicked off the UW's Strategic Roadmap Project for Information Management and Administrative Systems (IM/AS) on October 10.

  • Provost Phyllis Wise opened the meeting by thanking the team for participating and encouraging them to work as efficiently as possible to define a future vision for IM/AS.
  • Vice Provost Sara Gomez emphasized the importance of this effort and the critical role of the Roadmap Working Team in integrating the vision and resulting action plan.

Additional meetings during Fall Quarter will focus on refining guiding principles, defining the current state of UW information management and administrative systems, and initiating the visioning phase of the project.

For more information about the project, including the visioning and other phases, see the Strategic Roadmap Web site at:

Task Groups Documenting UW's Current IM/AS Environment

Eight area-specific task groups are documenting the current environment of UW information management and administrative systems (IM/AS) as part of the Roadmap project. Task Group leads serve on the Roadmap Working Team, which will integrate the task group work. This work will continue through November, with results presented to the Information Management Advisory Committee (I-MAC) in December.

Task groups include: finance, research, HR/payroll, student, facilities/space, alumni/development, information management, and governance.

I-MAC Defines Themes to Develop Guiding Principles

I-MAC defined the themes and key components of a set of guiding principles at its September meeting. Once developed, the guiding principles will be used to set priorities and guide decision-making for IM/AS on an institutional level.

The guiding principles will also assist the Roadmap teams as we define a future vision for where the UW wants to be in the next five-to-ten years, identify the gap between the current state and future vision, and chart an action plan for the future.

Technology Advisory Group Kicks Off in November

A Technical Advisory Group kicks off on November 27. It will provide technical advice and input on the Roadmap Working Team's action plan, and it will comment on technical dependencies that might influence the sequencing of the Roadmap. Additionally, it will review and discuss areas where technical guidelines could support Roadmap implementation.

Visioning Phase Starts in December

The current environment phase of the Roadmap will wrap up at the end of November, with the visioning phase starting in December and continuing through early Winter Quarter. During this phase, task groups will work on defining a future vision for UW IM/AS.

Activities during this phase will include interviews with task group sponsors, visioning sessions with the task group, and visioning exercises with the Roadmap working team.

Once the visioning phase is completed, next steps will include a gap analysis and an action plan.
