UW Strategic Roadmap for Information Management and Administrative Systems

Creating a Vision and Action Plan for the Future

Overview

What is the Strategic Roadmap?

The University of Washington Strategic Roadmap for Information Management and Administrative Systems is a vision and action plan for the future. The "Roadmap" will:

  • Define a vision for the future of UW information management and administrative systems aligned with the university's business goals and priorities
  • Develop an action plan for achieving that vision
  • Get the UW on the path to implementing systems, processes, and information that fully support business and information management needs

Work on the Roadmap will continue through the 2007-08 academic year, with a target completion date of summer 2008. For more details, see Approach and Schedule.

The Roadmap is being developed in response to needs identified by the IS Futures Task Force and the Information Management Advisory Committee (I-MAC):

  • The IS Futures Task Force determined that the University of Washington needed a clear, integrated, long-term plan for information systems and a vision of where the university needs to be in five or ten years.
  • I-MAC needed a context in which to prioritize project requests and a framework for determining how individual requests would fit into a longer term vision.

In response to these needs, OIM was created to ensure the long-term integration of systems, planning, and resources supporting UW information management and administrative systems (IM/AS). The Roadmap is the plan that will enable the UW to achieve its IM/AS goals.

For more information, see the Strategic Roadmap project charter.

Guiding Principles

The Information Management Advisory Committee (I-MAC) is developing guiding principles for the Roadmap that will:

  • Set the framework for decision-making and prioritization
  • Guide the UW's approach to information management and administrative systems
  • Help inform the UW community about technology strategy and investment decisions
  • Support the need for transparency

I-MAC is developing the guiding principles around the following strategic business themes:

  • Communication and service
  • Core administrative systems
  • Customer/end user orientation
  • Funding, costs, and investments
  • Improved business processes
  • Information management
  • Integration
  • Managing risk and compliance
  • Decision making
  • Organizational change
  • Partnership, community, and collaboration
  • Strategic alignment

Who Will Develop the Roadmap?

Development of the Roadmap is a collaborative effort involving committees and task groups of key stakeholders from across the university community:

  • More than 175 people will participate, representing a cross section of the UW community, including large, small and mid-sized schools, central administration, health sciences, and the three UW campuses.
  • Team members will take a long-term, institution-wide view.
  • The effort is being coordinated by the Office of Information Management.
  • The effort is being guided by the Information Management Advisory Committee (I-MAC), which is serving as the steering committee for the project.
