
Business Applications
Led by Bill Shirey, Associate Vice Provost, this division:
- Ensures efficient operation of the UW's centrally-supported core business applications in support of the UW's mission
- Works in partnership with the broader OIM community to understand the locally-managed business systems used throughout the UW and how best to provide services that reduce redundancy
The staff in Business Applications maintains and supports the University of Washington's enterprise administrative information systems:
- Academic Systems (Hugh Parker, Manager)

- Applications Processing and Coordination (Maureen Noonan, Manager)
- Financial Systems (Tim McAllister, Manager)
- Human Resources/Payroll Systems (Linda Braziel, Manager)

2007-2008 Priorities:

Support the UW's core administrative systems. Critical process support areas are:
- Payroll end-of-year
- Financial Aid start-of-year
- Campaign for Washington completion
- Fiscal year-end
- Annual salary revisions
Work with priority-setting groups to identify the highest-priority maintenance projects. High-profile projects to be worked on include:
- eTravel
- MyUWClass courseware replacement
- Stores/Facilities transition
- Advance Web Access conversion (phase 1 - Oracle conversion)
- Support multiple offers of financial aid
- Indirect Cost Enhancements (IMAC maintenance project)
Complete critical technology renewal projects:
- Eliminate J++ in our web applications
- Complete the phase-out of the UW Web Credit Card suite of applications
- Convert remaining HR/Payroll applications to ASTRA; eliminate the
UWAuth subsystem
- Complete the conversion from SQL2000 to SQL2005 where applicable
- Convert .asp applications to Visual Studio 2005
- Convert mainframe databases to IndependentTrans and ReapplyCompleted
- Package upgrades: JDE 8.12, Ariba 9, Advance 9
- (Ongoing) Convert mainframe batch processes to meet WFL Standards
- (Ongoing) File handling security and reliability improvements
Refine the maintenance project intake process to:
- Reflect the interrelationship between current products and strategic
projects
- More formally incorporate the community and partnership perspective
Engage in partnerships:
- Work with the Community and Partnership Development division to start to become familiar with the range of local business applications used on campus.
- Work with the Strategic Projects and Portfolios division to define the requirements for production implementation of new products.
- Work with the Enterprise Information Services division on SOA initiatives.
- Actively participate in Disaster Recovery/Business Resumption planning with our business partners and the Office of UW Technology.
- Work with UW Technology on initiatives related to Reliable and Responsive Systems:
- AARF Enhancement Project
- Monitoring Oversight
- Incident Response procedures
- Change Management
Participate in the transition of internal AIS and team web pages to the new OIM site.
Engage the Business Applications staff in understanding and embracing the OIM vision, the future of UW administrative systems, and their critical role in achieving the vision.
