Messages from the President & Provost on UW budget

The following list of official messages is provided as a convenient reference:

March 1, 2013: Today’s federal budget reductions, a message from President Michael K. Young: “Today, the long-expected and much talked-about automatic federal budget reductions—otherwise known as “sequestration”—take effect. While many areas of federal spending in our state will be affected, resulting in reductions in services and jobs, the major impact to the University will be in our research program, with a smaller impact on student financial aid.”

May 10, 2012: Achieving Budget Stabilization, a message from Provost Cauce, “At their meeting last week, President Young and I presented the Regents with a 2012–13 budget proposal. The proposal included scenarios for tuition increases ranging from 14 to 18 percent—in line with legislatively authorized levels. The Regents will adopt a budget and tuition levels for next year at the June meeting.”

November 21, 2011: Message from UW President on Governor Gregoire’s 2012 supplemental budget proposal (blog), “…includes an additional 17% budget reduction for the UW (approximately $38 million), but most importantly, it also includes tax proposals that if adopted would restore the $38 million cut…Other cuts in the budget have impacts on the University…”

October 24, 2011: Update on the supplemental budget process from UW President, Michael K. Young, “… news this fall about the continuing slump in state tax revenues, the projected resulting budget deficit and the need for the Legislature and the Governor to adjust the current biennial budget in a special session…”

May 2011: Statement from UW Interim President Phyllis Wise regarding state budget (blog)

April 18, 2011: Message from Phyllis M. Wise, Interim President, “We clearly face enormous challenges…Last Tuesday, the Washington State Senate released its operating budget proposal for the 2011–13 biennium…”

March 30, 2011: Message from Interim Provost, Mary Lidstrom, “…I have held budget discussions with all of the UW’s senior administrators – deans, chancellors, vice presidents, and vice provosts, and today I am updating all of you on what we have been doing.”
