Activity Based Budgeting Project
The UW is currently assessing the potential value and feasibility of implementing a new activity based budgeting (ABB) system. ABB is a method of budgeting in which the activities that incur costs in every functional area are accounted for, analyzed, and then linked to the mission and strategic goals of the institution. The full costs of programs and services are then more transparent and available to help with planning, budgeting and decision making.
NEXTCITY: Sustainable Urbanization
The UW has made "sustainable urbanization" a major focus for the coming academic year (2009-2010). With the support of The Graduate School, the NEXT CITY series will include five lectures. The spring 2010 Provost Lecture: "City in Five Acts: Interpreting Urban Experience" by Daniel S. Friedman will discuss sustainable living and the future of our cities.

"Sustainable urbanization hits close to home. As a public research institution located in the heart of a globally connected metropolitan area, with deep faculty expertise in urban fields, the UW can be a leader in finding informed solutions to the social and environmental challenges posed by the urbanization of the planet. NEXT CITY will form a conversation across the UW and with the community and region."

Two Years to Two Decades (2y2d)
"If the UW does not take steps to manage change, it will manage us." Provost Wise
The recent economic climate and the resulting impacts on the UW have caused wide concern that quality will suffer at the UW if steps are not taken. To respond to this urgent need, the Provost has launched the Two Years to Two Decades (2y2d) Initiative.
Through a collaborative process, the 2y2d Initiative builds on the foundation of the UW Vision and Values to develop a sustainable academic business plan for the next 20 years—a plan that reflects our shared mission, takes into account current realities, guides deciion-making and investment, and allows the UW to excel in the next.
