Doug Wadden, professor and chair of design in the School of Art, has been named executive vice provost of academic affairs and planning, Provost Phyllis Wise has announced. He replaces current Executive Vice Provost Ana Mari Cauce, who has accepted the position of dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Wadden has been on the UW faculty since 1970 and is the Marsha and Jay Glazer Endowed University Professor. He received his B.F.A. from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1968 and his M.F.A. in Graphic Design from Yale University in 1970. He has extensive professional experience in corporate and institutional communications, has won numerous competitive awards and has been exhibited and published throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. His work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, the Library of Congress and The Walker Art Center.

Wadden is a past chair of the UW Faculty Senate and has held several positions in campus governance as chair of the Councils on Academic Standards, Planning and Budgeting, Tuition Policy, the Tri-Campus Taskforce and the Regional Bio-containment Lab Site Review, as well as membership in numerous committees including College and School Organization, Intercollegiate Athletics and Stadium Development.

"I am very pleased that Doug has accepted my offer to become executive vice provost of academic affairs and planning," Provost Wise said.  "His extensive leadership experience in the Faculty Senate and many advisory committees and his long history as an accomplished faculty member in the College of Arts and Sciences make him eminently qualified for this position.  I look forward to working closely with him on important issues that we face."

Wise expressed gratitude to Cauce for her "incredible support  and partnership in these first years of my tenure as provost."

Wadden will assume his new duties April 1, when Cauce takes up her new position in A&S.
