DIVERSITY
Diversity Education at the UW
Betty Schmitz, Director, Center for Curriculum Transformation in the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity, talks about opportunities to study diversity and its impact on being a global citizen.
Every year, the Center for Curriculum Transformation publishes a booklet, The Learning We Need Now, to introduce students to courses, programs of study, and co-curricular activities that emphasize diversity. For example, The Diversity Minor in the College of Arts and Sciences is designed to strengthen students’ understanding of how race, class, gender, disability, ethnicity, nationality, sexuality, religion, and age interact to define identities and social relations. A new course, (Re)Thinking Diversity, in the Comparative History of Ideas program provides students with the latest interdisciplinary scholarship on diversity. By taking advantage of the many opportunities to study diversity, UW students can be better prepared for global citizenship.
