Safeco Complex Purchase
Marilyn Cox, Assistant Vice Provost for Capital Planning and Chair of the UW Tower Planning Advisory Committee, talks about the benefits of the Safeco Complex Purchase.
The recent acquisition of the Safeco properties in the University District (now referred to as the UW Tower properties) provides the University of Washington with a landmark opportunity to increase on-campus space for teaching and research as administrative units are relocated into the UW Tower properties, and to improve the efficiency of the institution's leased space portfolio through lease consolidation.
A minimum of 300,000 square feet of use currently located in leased facilities throughout the region will be relocated to the newly acquired property. To the extent that the University receives state support for operations and maintenance funding for the UW Tower properties during the 2007 legislative session, the remaining space will be assigned to additional programs, with the result of releasing current space on the Seattle campus for academic uses. To the extent that operations and maintenance are not supported by the state, third party or self-sustaining uses will be considered for the remaining space.
Consolidating administrative programs and operations that are now scattered across campus and in leased space throughout the city will bring new efficiencies and closer collaborations.
We look forward to sharing 2008 move-in plans with campus later this summer.
