Community Building Within the iSchool
Cris Mesling, Academics Administrator in the Information School, speaks about the sense of community in the school.
I've worked for other units on campus prior to joining the Information School and, though I liked those places, the iSchool is truly unique. Mike Eisenberg, Dean Emeritus, did an amazing job of growing the school and building up a vibrant community. This community continues to thrive under the leadership of Dean Harry Bruce. Together faculty, staff, and students are dedicated to a collaborative culture and a shared dedication to improving society and making a difference through information. This isn't just rhetoric - we really believe in creating a better world through the effective use of information!
This year the faculty and staff have been engaged in strategic planning. We've had numerous open school meetings with the larger community, as well as two faculty and staff retreats. There is a spirit of inclusiveness as we have all participated in setting the goals of the iSchool and we all know how to contribute to these goals. To me, the iSchool feels like a family because we are a community of shared values and each one of us believes in the work we do.
