The three-letter code shown in the table below is used to specify which platform to compile Pine for,
as explained in the section Building the Pine
Programs in the Technical Notes. Please note: these codes are not parts of filenames, but
arguments to the build command used to compile the Pine source code.
Here is the full list of Pine ports:

Linux
(On some platforms the vsnprintf implementation is apparently not
correct, and pine will crash early on with a SegFault. The only
place where pine uses vsnprintf is in the debugjournal() routine
in .../pine/osdep/debuging.tim. You can exclude this by compiling
without DEBUGJOURNAL defined. Try a build command like
./build DEBUG="-g -DDEBUG" lnp
to work around this problem. August, 2003)
lnx Linux using crypt from the C library
lnp Linux using Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM)
slx Linux using -lcrypt to get the crypt function
sl4 Linux using -lshadow to get the crypt() function
sl5 Linux using shadow passwords, no extra libraries
ldb Debian Linux. Same as lnp but with SSLDIR=/usr,
SSLINCLUDE=/usr/include/openssl, SSLCERTS=/etc/ssl/certs,
SSLKEYS=/etc/ssl/private. The packages libssl-dev, libpam-dev,
and ncurses-dev are required for building
lmd Mandrakelinux. Same as lnp but with SSLDIR=/usr/lib/ssl,
SSLINCLUDE=/usr/include, SSLLIB=/usr/lib
