The Pacific Northwest Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (PNW LSAMP) supports educators and advocates who increase underrepresented minority (URM) participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors. Partners includes science centers: Pacific Science Center,Discovery Center of Idaho and Oregon Museum of Science and Industry; pre- college programs:Oregon MESA and Washington MESA; community colleges: Yakima Valley Community College, Highline Community College, Columbia Basin Community College, Seattle Central Community College,Chemeketa Community College, Linn-Benton Community College and College of Western Idaho; andfour-year institutions: University of Washington, Washington State University, Boise State University,Portland State University and Oregon State University. This regional Alliance is committed to leverage the institutions resources and existing relationships of the colleges and universities in the three states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
The Pacific Northwest Region is projected to produce 10,000 more underrepresented high school graduates that it produced in the 2004-05 academic year. The projected demographic shifts present an extraordinary opportunity for colleges and universities in the three state region to greatly increase the diversity of students earning STEM degrees. Each state has committed substantial resources to efforts to increase degrees granted in STEM as part of economic development initiatives.
