College Readiness Professional Development workshop: Creating a College-Going Culture in Our Communities

Included structured conversations about the unique challenges and opportunities in creating a college-going culture.  A panel of college retention professionals provided community perspectives about the steps needed to make a college-going culture take root.  Lynda Coates, a poverty consultant,  provided tools for educators to help students in poverty reach their full potential.

GEAR UP staff Professional Development workshop: Engaging GEAR UP Students, Involving GEAR UP Families

February 7, 2012, UW Tacoma Campus, Tacoma, Washington

Focused on best practices in engaging GEAR UP families and examined best practices from exemplary GEAR UP programs.  Our partner, the College Success Foundation (insert hyperlink), presented a session on Aspirations to Actions – a comprehensive electronic library of workshops, lessons, resources and assessment tools.   Juan Guerra, Ph.D., guest speaker,  presented a session on Families as Partners Supporting Student Success. This workshop provided an opportunity to GEAR UP educators and staff to connect with faculty and university leaders involved in UW Tacoma’s Office for Equity and Diversity about our shared commitment to the success of our GEAR Up students.

Provided opportunities to learn best practices in engaging GEAR UP families and examined best practices from exemplary GEAR UP programs.  Raymond Reyes, Ph.D., Associate Mission Vice President for Intercultural Relations at Gonzaga University, provided a keynote address on cultural understanding and equity in education.  The College Success Foundation presented Aspirations to Actions.

College Readiness Professional Development – “Making the Grade: Reaching GEAR UP’S  Academic Targets”

April 9 & 10, Tumwater, Washington
April 16 & 17, 2012, Wenatchee, Washington

School leaders, GEAR UP staff, and classroom teachers engaged in discussions about research on academic achievement. Participants shared strategies and provided coaching to their peers. A highlight of the event was a presentation by Dr. Luis Fraga, UW’s Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement, entitled Education in the 21st Century: Building a Common Destiny.

GEAR UP Educator Institute – “The Common Core: Preparing GEAR UP Students for Rigor & Academic Success”

June 25-29, 2012, UW Seattle Campus, Seattle, Washington

University of Washington GEAR UP Educator Development Initiative hosted a week-long Summer Institute preparing educators for new State standards http://www.corestandards.org/.

Sixty middle and high school GEAR UP educators from across the state participated in the Institute, “The Common Core:  Preparing GEAR UP students for Rigor and Academic Success”, provided an opportunity for teachers, curriculum directors, principals and GEAR UP staff to become familiar with the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

The CCSS Initiative is a states-led effort to establish standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics that students should meet when they graduate from high school in order to be successful in credit-bearing courses in Washington.  CCSS for Washington State is implemented through the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) http://www.k12.wa.us/corestandards.org. The assessments aligned to CCSS were developed by a state-led consortium www.smarterbalanced.org/.   These standards will be fully implemented by 2014-15.
